View Hill WOW Visit

This morning we had a visit from Bu, the principal at View Hill School in Oxford with two students, Sophie and Heidi. They have done so well in creating Wearable Art that in a couple of weeks they are off to Wellington to view the real show!

They brought in some amazing creations for us to see - papier mache, melted record clocks, chicken wire to create something original inspired by a Salvador Dali painting.

They shared their engineering design process that follows a circular process that doesn't necessarily have a starting and ending point.

The students talked about how they needed to listen to others throughout the process! The artwork will change throughout. The students created a design portfolio to generate and record ideas. They talked about working to meet certain criteria and how important this is. We were shown an underwater octopus with a brass plant pot helmet with expanding, painted foam sprayed on it!

They created resource lists to decide on what they might need and where they might get it from. To be able to put a design into reality you need to be able to find the resources to create it.

During the asking phase the students ask heaps of questions to clarify what they want to do and how they might be able to make it reality. These questions are crucial in keeping on top of their design process. Different tools can be used to help ask valuable questions.

During the improving phase you adapt the designs after reflecting on what you have already done. Have you met the criteria, have you designed something that is durable enough? Which resources didn't work, which did? What were the problems we found and how can we fix them?

This visit has certainly inspired us all to go further with our Wearable Arts designs.
